AD202 Developing with the IBM Lotus Expeditor for IBM Lotus Expeditor and IBM Lotus Notes 8
Category LS 2007Speakers: Amit Aghara (IBM), Bob Balfe (IBM)
I guess I'm behind the times, or perhaps I just haven't been paying attention; but today during the opening general session I heard about Lotus Expeditor for the very first time. This has, for me at least, caused a minor paradigm shift; which has also completely changed my list of sessions I want to attend.
From the sessions db:
This session is an introduction to development of Composite and Portlet Applications for the Lotus Expeditor platform and the Lotus Notes 8 client using the Lotus Expeditor Toolkit (XPDT). The talk will hit on key elements of Composite and Portlet Applications running in Lotus Expeditor. Topics will include: Introduction to the Composite Application Infrastructure; Development of decoupled components including Portlets and Eclipse based views using the XPDT; Eclipse component development for Lotus Expeditor and Lotus Notes 8 clients; and Declarative wiring of components using the Portal Administrator UI.The session ends with a demonstration of locally running portlets communicating with Eclipse SWT Views using declarative wiring.
I've been developing (Java stuff) using the Eclipse platform for some time now -which means that I'm really interested in developing Notes stuff using this as well. Expeditor (the Lotus Expeditor Toolkit) runs completely within the Eclipse environment; which means that this is exactly what I want to start playing with.
While I did enjoy this session; I personally think this should have been split into two sessions. I understand that Portal (the product group) is really important to IBM; really, I do get it. However I'm not now (or am very likely to) move to portal; nor is my current employer. We are however looking forward to Lotus Notes & Domino 8. I know the official stance from IBM is that they are not pushing Notes/Domino customers to portal; but the reality is that I am very much feeling an undercurrent of pressure to do so. What does this has to do with this session is simply that I would have preferred to attend a session focused on using XPDT do develop Expeditor and Lotus Notes Client apps. The other half of this session focused on Portal stuff, even though it was interesting, provided no value to me.
As far as this session goes, I really enjoyed it. Good detail level (they even covered licensing issues) throughout. Both Bob (who opened the session and provided context for what they were going to present) and Amit (who gave us the detailed information about how things worked) are excellent speakers. Both of them appeared confident and at ease; and really knew (as far as I could tell) what they were talking about.
