Easiest Install Ever

QuickImage Category Technical

So, I installed Linux on my old Dimension last night. I booted the machine using the bootable DVD that came in the book, answered a few setup questions (root password, which packages to include, etc) and in two shakes (well, closer to three) of a monkey's tail I had Fedora Core 1 up and running.

At this point, I am a complete beginner. I don't yet even know the differences between desktops, so I went ahead and selected both Gnome and KBE from the configuration choices. I have noticed that Fedora Core 3 has been released, so I think I'm going to play with this release for a few days, and then go ahead and pull down the distros (that's geek speak for "distributions" -oooh, I'm starting to enjoy this) do a clean install with that.

I have installed many other operating systems in the past, The list includes CPM, IBM-DOS, MS-DOS 2-5, Windows, WFW, Win95, Win98, WinNT (3.51 & 4), Win2K, & WinXP, IBM OS/2 2-4 (I was even on the Merlin, which eventually became Warp 4, beta team). I have done so many DOS and Windows installs that I've lost count. My guess is that I have probably spend over a thousand hours of my life installing various operating systems, and this was by far the easiest and most hassle free install I've ever done. If working with Linux turns out to be as easy as the install was, then I'm already converted.

Of course, there is still that whole Apache, MySQL, PHP thing......
