Venison on the Grill

Category Cars and Trucks

Just got back from my trip to SLC, Utah.  (I went there on a family trip with my son (6 years old), my sister, and her two kids (boy age 5, girl age 3) The Mighty V10 performed flawlessly.  (Better, in fact, than I had expected)

On the interstates, I set the cruise at 79 and just left it there.  The truck never wavered or slowed down (OD was ON) on any hill, with the exception of the long climb coming into Flagstaff (going south on SR89), at which time I disengaged the OD.  Truck flew up the hill (I'm so happy there is a passing lane there).

Had some poor soul in a SD250 Triton try to pass me going up the hill into Camp Verde.  I stayed to the right and didn't touch the gas, just left the cruise on.  He managed to get next to me, at which time I gave him a nice smile.  About that time his Triton decided it wasn't going to make it and he dropped off.  Sometimes I feel sorry for non-Rammers.  If they only knew...

Bad things do happen sometimes, and Mr. Murphy rose to the occasion about 25 miles south of Beaver, Utah.  I was on Utah SR20, headed east to the I15 junction, when a beautiful, trophy-class (200+ lb.) buck (4 point rack at least 2 feet across, still had velvet)  tried to play chicken with the Ram.  (He lost).  The front bumper caught him on his right flank, and tossed him off the road.  I pulled over and went back to check him out.

The poor critter was still alive, with a broken pelvis and backbone.  So I went back to the truck to get my pistol, at which point my son asks me if I am going to stop the deer from suffering.  I looked up and all three kids are staring at me with moon-eyes.  (Being tough doesn't mean you can't shed a tear now and then.)  I said "yeah" and went on back to the deer and put him down.

Damage to the Ram was pretty minimal (ripped the air dam off from below the bumper  -I was going to remove that anyway for added clearance, and cracked the lens of the running light/turn signal on the passenger side), which impressed me.  I hauled the deer to the Beaver County Sheriff's office, where they took the carcass and filled out an accident report (for my insurance).  I have to admit I am impressed with that little town.  (Definitely worth thinking about when retirement time comes around.)

TTFN!
Devin.
