Something missing from something else

Category Technical Reviews

As many of you are probably aware, I'm using a not-yet-released IDE for development testing, and am running it on Windows 7 RC (64 bit).

So far, I've found it to be much more stable than the previous Gold Release version. As with any "test" version of software, there are some issues, but on the whole this version is shaping up nicely.

I received this dialog box today (when attempting to remove an application bookmark from my workspace); and was absolutely thrilled to see that the "idiot check box" has been removed. You can still delete an application, but it now requires an explicit decision and action from you, rather than a simple checkbox.

It's the little things like this that help make a good product great.

Gravatar Image1 - Couldn't agree more. That old checkbox always scared the hell out of me. Much happier with the new version. Safer for when I am in idiot mode Emoticon

Gravatar Image2 - Indeed... the checkbox reminded me of my former life as an admin when I would routinely have to restore a user's mail file after they accidentally deleted it (this was back when users had to have Manager access in order for calendar delegation to work).

By the way, if you think the checkbox removal is a great improvement, select File > Preferences, Domino Designer > XPages, and check out the new setting they added... especially the explanation of how to decide which option to choose. Several of our clients are going to be rather pleased to see this.

(being intentionally vague since I'm not sure whether IBM has publicly announced this particular change)

Gravatar Image3 - @2 - Very nice. Already made my selections. Although I'm curious, who said anything about IBM? Emoticon

Gravatar Image4 - @3 - "on the whole 8.5.1 is shaping up nicely." "from my DDE workspace" plus Planetlotus has your original title already.

#maskingfail Emoticon

Don't sweat it, though. If IBM wants to come complain to me, I'll take the heat. Emoticon

Gravatar Image5 - @4 - I'm sorry. I f%#&ed up. Emoticon

Gravatar Image6 - @5 - No worries at all, man.

Gravatar Image7 - Ok, now you violated the NDA and I suggest that you hand over your 8.5.1 version to me Emoticon
Glad to hear that this seems to be more fun.

Gravatar Image8 - There is always this option: { Link }

Gravatar Image9 - <cough>looks other way</cough>

I want to give you all opportunities to talk about 8.5.1 and its coolness, but let's stay within the NDA bounds for now thx Emoticon

Gravatar Image10 - So wait ... is 64-bit Windows going to be supported in 8.5.1? If you haven't, you may want to check. I've had some folks who thought they'd be cool, use 64-bit Vista and lots Eclipse of stuff broke. I checked the systems requirements and lo and behold, it wasn't supported.

Gravatar Image11 - @10 - Hey ther Tim.

I have absolutely no idea, zero, nada, zip whether or not 8.5.1 will or will not officially be supported on a 64 bit Windows platform.
